Is there a timeframe for learning this skills...or is it one of those "the time you put in is the time you get out" type of thing?

Hi Gaya,

I'm a little late to the party now seeing as this article was written two and a half years ago, but I just wanted to leave a note and say thank you, your article is a really good starting point for any budding front-end starters out there,

The nice thing is that now - possibly more than ever - front-end web development is going through a significant flux - more and more people are no longer supporting IE6 (even Google!), and HTML5 is quickly gaining momentum as the default go-to standard now. Especially with Apple not supporting Flash on their mobile devices, now is a great time to be a front-end developer!

Thanks again for the article - it was exactly what I was looking for (I'm trying to explain to a young relative about what I do).

Nice article. I agree with all the points except using w3schools for learning. w3schools is a good place for starters but one cannot rely on the information provided there. It is advisable to start learning HTML from - https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/learn/html instead.

Sigh...Thank you! At last some answers.

Been trying to learn design for a couple of months and getting on fairly well but trying to learn it all is daunting from a wannabe freelance point of view. Anyway, got offered a potential front end coder job and that gave me some clarity on what to knuckle down on. This post provided even greater clarity; you could have saved my job to (hopefully) be.

Thanks a kiloton!

Thanks for the article Gaya, i think i'm gonna stick with jQuery:)

And maybe an important step: you have to dump IE6 at first place

Also, it should be mentioned that if you load your js library from a CDN instead of your own server, it will load so fast that it's size becomes much less of an issue.

hmm... the article loses a little credibility when Scriptaculous is mentioned but Prototype isn't (Scriptaculous has a Prototype dependency).

Excellent post! I've been trying to figure out what would constitue as front end developing and how to go about learning it. I'll definitely be following these steps.

Thanks for the post!

jQuery is around 56 KB, and MooTools is around 62K. The 16KB is when it is gzipped on the server. Both jQuery and MooTools can be gzipped. The difference between the two is with jQuery you have to always include the whole library. With MooTools you can download only a part of the core library as needed for your project, making it more "lightweight".
