I also prefer a modified version of Starkers. The Starkers theme was a lot easier for me to set up just the way I want it as a starting point.

I’ve also used Starkers by EJ Stocks several times and have had great results with it! Starkers combined with BlueprintCSS is a great way to get started with a new theme quickly.

I have used the Starkers theme from Elliot Jay Stocks with lots of luck. I have added other things to it that make it a great starting point for me.
